Working Voices was formed in 1989 in Perth, Western Australia, as the Combined Trade Unions choir. Initially consisting solely of Union members, it now has members from all walks of life. We share a common passion…we want to sing songs that make a difference. The words are important to the Choir. We like to sound good and we enjoy working on the harmonies and getting them right.

But it’s the song that matters. So we sing songs that mean something about issues like:

  • working life,
  • social justice,
  • freedom from oppression,
  • peace,
  • reconciliation,
  • harmony with our
    environment.

Choir Directors

Bernard and Eleanor Carney, both well-known for their appearances at Festivals around the nation, have been directors of the choir for about ten years. Bernard is a full-time entertainer and highly-regarded singer song-writer and Eleanor recently retired from her profession as a music teacher.

A number of Bernard’s songs are included in the Choir’s repertoire, including ‘Bye Bye Awards’, ‘Sacred Place’, Walking together’ and ‘Stand together’.

Performances

There are about 40 active members in the choir, and we appear at rallies, marches, functions, gatherings, concerts and festivals.

Recent performances have included:

  • May Day Rally and March, Fremantle
  • National Day of Action
  • Denmark Festival of Voice
  • Fairbridge Festival
  • Midland Railway Workshop (Paul Robeson Celebratory Concert)
  • National Refugee Week Opening Function
  • Brookton Festival
  • 2007 National Folk Festival, Canberra
